Bonkowski & Associates, Inc. hazardous materials management program is committed to helping Clients achieve Site Closure as soon as practicable. Through the efficient collection, management and dissemination of information, we have helped numerous Clients negotiate both risk based and full Closure of hazardous waste sites. Given the complexities of the requirements of Closure for each site, and the nature of soil contaminated with chemicals, fuels, oils, and other substances; we can prepare a report to the satisfaction of the oversight agency that closure conditions have been met.

Bonkowski & Associates, Inc. have helped Clients achieve Closure at the following types of facilities:

  • Underground Storage Tank Sites
  • Landfills
  • Waste Water Injection Wells
  • Above Ground Storage Tanks
  • California Superfund Sites

Generally, the Closure conditions that have to be met ensure that no unauthorized release has occurred from any hazardous materials storage facility, and that if a release has occurred, it has been remediated to the extent that it no longer threatens environmental receptors. In other words, generators must do all they can do to identify where unregulated waste chemicals have and can go once they enter the environment.

In almost all cases, generators must show through the use of a hydrogeologic assessment report (or similar) whether a release has substantially affected subsurface soil and groundwater, and whether conditions are suitable as a precedent to Closure. Bonkowski & Associates, Inc. qualified personnel can prepare these reports, and with the use of monitoring data, can make an accurate assessment of subsurface conditions to determine if leachate or contaminants have or are migrating toward a sensitive receptor. For projects involving underground storage tanks, we work closely with the SWRCB to help negotiate closure with the local oversight agency if there is a disagreement with respect to chemical exposure potential.
